The Maldives is a country comprising of 26 natural atolls, covering 1192 islands in total. One of the hottest travel destinations of all time, Maldives or the Maldive Islands, as it was previously known as, were first settled by the Buddhist seafarers who came from Sri Lanka and India way back in 5th century B.C. Originally, it was under Sri Lanka's suzerainty until the British came and took it under their rules in 1887. The entire region became a republic for the first time in its history in 1952 and then again in 1968. Presently, the Maldives is an independent nation. It suffered huge destructions in the Tsunami that hit the coasts of Indian Ocean in December 2004. Places and infrastructure are being renovated steadily to bring back travel industry back on track since it is the main economy driver of the country. Despite such losses from a natural disaster the Maldives still remains an eternal favorite with the sea lovers from across the world.
